Project Description

The MCDF grant aims to improve Eastern Bank PLC’s (EBL) environmental and social management system (ESMS) and practices, including a project-level grievance redress mechanism. EBL is a private commercial bank in Bangladesh that provides a full range of banking products and services.

Enhanced ESMS and practices will strengthen EBL’s institutional capacity to implement International Financial Institution (IFI) standards in managing environmental and social (E&S) risks and impacts.

The activities to be financed by the grant include a comprehensive gap analysis and assessment report, work to align EBL’s ESMS with AIIB’s and other IFIs’ standards, and the development and partial implementation of an E&S capacity building plan.

Alignment with MCDF Core Values

The MCDF grant will help EBL meet AIIB’s and other IFIs’ standards in areas such as biodiversity impact management, E&S assessment, and risk management. The enhanced ESMS would benefit sub-projects financed by AIIB with the potential to support Bangladesh’s domestic and cross-border connectivity.
