Greater Abidjan Freight Barge Transport Development Project
The MCDF grant is supporting preparatory activities for the Greater Abidjan Freight Barge Transport Development Project in Côte d’Ivoire, which will establish a barge corridor along the Ébrié Lagoon to connect a planned terminal platform with the Autonomous Port of Abidjan.
The grant is financing a pre-investment study and environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA). It is also funding technical and procurement peer project review work, including the hiring of a port engineering expert and procurement and concessions expert to help realize high-quality project preparation based on the pre-investment study and ESIA.
The MCDF grant is helping to ensure that the underling investment meets policy and standards requirements for targeted Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank financing. By diverting cargo traffic from roads to lagoon barges, the underlying investment will help enhance trade flows, stretching to landlocked countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
