Botswana – Namibia interconnector (BONA)
The MCDF grant supports a combined pre-feasibility and feasibility analysis, focusing on identifying cost-effective and technically robust solutions for a high-volume interconnector facility project to deliver renewable-based power between Botswana and Namibia. The study will inform the interconnector route and consider the two other Botswana-anchored interconnector lines in gauging the viability of a 400 kilovolt (kV) line compared to a larger 765 kV line.
The grant will help ensure that the Botswana – Namibia Interconnector project is prepared in line with International Financial Institution (IFI) standards for financing by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and partners. The project is designed to enhance regional electricity connectivity, facilitate renewable energy integration, and support the development of a robust, interconnected Southern African power market.
