Wastewater Treatment and Sanitation System in Lake Titicaca – Peru and Bolivia
The MCDF grant funds a comprehensive feasibility study for the construction and operation of two wastewater treatment and sanitation facilities in the Peruvian and Bolivian basins of Lake Titicaca, respectively. Activities include an initial survey of the current wastewater and sanitation system in the Suches and Huancané river basins and identification of localities to be included in the feasibility study. This due diligence will cover technical, economic, financial, environmental, social, climate resilience, and other considerations, including specific vulnerabilities to local high-altitude conditions.
The grant will help ensure that the project is prepared in line with International Financial Institution standards for financing by the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. The project is intended to significantly reduce pollutant loads and other discharge into the lake from towns and industry in the Suches and Huancané basin areas, halting the deterioration of the lake’s water quality.
