A USD2.1 million grant to support technical work to curb pollution and enhance water resource management in the Puyango-Tumbes Transboundary Water Basin between Peru and Ecuador was approved by the Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Finance (MCDF) Governing Committee at its meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on 24 September. The project will be implemented by the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF).
The grant is MCDF’s first to address transboundary water resources management. It will fund activities to help the Binational Commission Secretariat responsible for the development of the Puyango-Tumbes Transboundary Water Basin to review the area’s water management and related environmental challenges.
The MCDF grant will also support capacity development to collect and analyze data, engage the private sector and other stakeholders, and develop investment proposals for protecting the ecologically fragile basin and its people.
The focus will be on strengthening institutional governance, planning, coordination, outreach, and training. The aim is to raise awareness among domestic and local governments, as well as businesses involved in water management and pollution control in the Puyango-Tumbes Transboundary Water Basin.
The activities supported by the MCDF grant will also seek to promote consensus on how to improve water usage, reduce contamination from industrial activities, and ensure ecological and public health in the area.
