MCDF Participates in 2026 Spring Meeting of MFI Working Group on Environmental and Social Standards

Vienna, Austria, 28-30 April 2026

The Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Finance (MCDF) participated as an official observer in the spring 2026 meeting of the Multilateral Financial Institution Working Group on Environmental and Social Standards in Vienna, Austria on 28-30 April, hosted by the OPEC Fund for International Development.

At the meeting, MCDF was represented by Ms. Kisa Mfalila, the MCDF CEO’s Senior Advisor on Environmental, Social, and Governance. The meeting brought together the heads of environmental and social (E&S) departments of 23 multilateral financial institutions (MFIs) who exchanged updates on E&S and emerging issues.

Alongside the working group meeting, MCDF and MFI partners held bilateral meetings to explore areas for deepening collaboration in promoting E&S standards that underpin sustainable, high-quality connectivity infrastructure investment.

MCDF and MFI partners highlighted growing use of risk-based and portfolio-level approaches in managing E&S risks and impacts, increased investment in digital tools, and rising attention to supply chain issues. They also discussed renewed engagement in nuclear energy, rare metals, and other emerging issues that require fresh thinking on how E&S risks and impacts are identified, managed, and monitored.

Ms. Mfalila explained that these emerging issues reinforce the value of MCDF’s support for project preparation, capacity building, and information sharing to facilitate the application of International Financial Institution standards in connectivity infrastructure projects to ensure their quality and bankability.

Participants agreed that the growing use of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies, together with increasing mutual reliance and harmonization among financiers, is elevating the importance of knowledge sharing and collaboration. Ms. Mfalila highlighted opportunities such as the MCDF Introductory Workshop Series on Digital Infrastructure and MCDF-supported E&S Community of Practice workshops. MFI partners’ comments on the capacity challenges facing borrowers, clients, contractors, and implementing agencies in applying E&S standards were noted.

Ms. Mfalila pointed out that MCDF’s capacity building activities could help address this gap. These include targeted training for project implementation units and contractors, a workshop on occupational health and safety monitoring in September, and the opening of the MCDF Learning Center at the Xiamen National Accounting Institute in China in November.
