A USD1,942,500 grant to improve transport connectivity and logistics efficiency in Togo, facilitating market access and trade across the West African country and its landlocked neighbors, was approved by the Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Finance (MCDF) Governing Committee during its meeting in Beijing on 10 June. The project will be prospectively cofinanced by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the World Bank.
The MCDF grant will finance preparatory activities for the rehabilitation and upgrade of secondary roads and rural tracks connecting Togo’s regional centers and capital city, Lomé, making these routes more climate resilient. It will also prepare the rehabilitation and operationalization of the railway connection between Lomé Port and PIA industrial park 15 kilometers north of Lomé, the commencement of a new freight rail transport service, and investment for agricultural production zone upgrades.
The ensuing investment project is expected to strengthen transport and logistics linkages between agricultural production zones, logistics platforms, and Lomé Port. The aim is to boost supply chains, reduce transport costs, raise transit efficiency, and facilitate trade corridor development and sustainable growth in Togo, Burkina Faso, and the broader region.
The MCDF grant will support technical and environmental and social studies, climate-resilient engineering assessments, procurement documentation, and targeted quality assurance activities, in accordance with International Financial Institution standards and good practices needed to make the project bankable and eligible for financing by AIIB and the World Bank.
